In December 1792, Elizabeth Middleton moves to join her family in the mountains of New York. There she meets Nathaniel Bonner, known to the Mohawk people as Between-Two-Lives. Elizabeth is determined to provide schooling for all the village children, but runs into resistance from her own family, as well as from local slave owners. The tale of Elizabeth and Nathaniel is intertwined with the history of the Mohawk nation and the history of American frontier life.
